how to pick the right flowers for your special day

Trying to figure out what flowers are right for your wedding? We were excited to help Erinn Hutkin of Gatehouse Media with her recent story about how to pick the right flowers for your special day…

“Some of his co-workers who got married in the 1980s told him they didn’t even know what kind of flowers were in their bouquets. Many just showed up at the church, wore a white dress and were handed a bundle of blooms.

Now, as a designer for weddings at Flora, a Chicago flower shop, Randy Ballesteros often works with brides who know exactly what they want thanks to TV, bridal magazines and celebrity nuptials. He’s sat through PowerPoint presentations and iPhone presentations from brides who seek a specific floral look.

“I’ve noticed with most brides, it’s not particularly about the type of bloom, it’s about color palette,” he said.

For spring, he said, many brides are picking flowers in pastels such as pink, pale green and sage.

In addition, Jaclyn Fisher, a wedding consultant and co-owner of the Philadelphia-area’s Two Little Birds Planning, said many brides choose flowers that are in season to evoke its spirit and save on costs. In-season flowers are less expensive, she said, because they’re easier for florists to find.

She said many spring brides are using “bright, romantic blooms,” especially peonies. Other popular seasonal flowers for spring ceremonies include hyacinth, tulips, lilac, cherry blossoms, anemones, daffodils, ranunculus and sweet peas.

For summer brides, Fisher said, in-season blooms include hydrangeas and garden roses. Other options include freesia, iris, asiatic and oriental lilies, snapdragons, gerbera daisies, sunflowers and zinnia.

Dahlias are popular among fall brides. Other seasonal fall flowers include aster, chrysanthemums, marigold, sunflowers, hydrangea, ornamental berries and zinnia.

Ballesteros added that many fall brides want bouquets full of fall hues such as red, orange and yellow, which can be achieved by tucking autumn leaves and acorns into a bouquet. Adding Japanese maple leaves or black calla lilies offers a dash of deep red color.

And winter brides can evoke the spirit of the season by building bouquets that include evergreen, holly, berries and pine cones. Fisher said other flowers that are in season include amaryllis, anemone, molucella (Bells of Ireland), cosmos, holly, jasmine, poinsettia, sweet pea, tulips and waxflower. She said trendy winter brides have even started adding feathers to their bouquets.

There are also several blooms that are available year-round, such as roses, orchids, calla lilies, gardenias, lily of the valley, scabiosa – even carnations.

When working with a florist, Ballesteros suggests brides bring photos of their dress, swatches of their bridesmaids’ gowns, a snapshot of their reception venue and images of flowers they like – and don’t like – to start bouquet-building.”

Gemma & Tony Engagement Shoot

We love seeing our couples’ engagement shoots! Check out these gorgeous shots of Gemma and Tony taken by Tyler Boye Photography. We especially love how Gemma’s beautiful blue sling-backs contrast the rustic outdoor setting. Tyler Arboretum in Wayne, PA lent the perfect backdrop for this fun, fall shoot. Can’t wait for their wedding next October!

getting into the holiday spirit

Looking for a fun way to get into the holiday spirit this weekend that doesn’t involve a mall? How about mixing a festive drink and baking some cookies? When packaged with a little love and creativity, we think cookies make a great gift for party hosts, neighbors, or friends.

Let’s first start with the cocktail! If eggnog is your holiday drink of choice, but you don’t feel like making it from scratch, Imbibe Magazine conducted a taste test and among the best brands were Horizon Organic, which was described as creamy, sweet, and mixed well with bourbon. If you are feeling adventurous, they offer this fun recipe from The World Bar in NYC…

10 large, fresh grade AA eggs, separated
1 cup superfine sugar
3 cups heavy cream
2 cups Mount Gay Eclipse Rum
6 tsp. pure almond extract
6 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
Glass: cocktail, wine, flute or toddy
Garnish: grated nutmeg and cinnamon

Separate eggs into two bowls. Beat yolks until stiff, and beat whites with half the sugar until peaks form. Slowly fold whites and yolks together. Separately, beat cream with almond extract, vanilla and remaining sugar in a bowl until stiff. Slowly fold in cream with egg mixture. Add rum and stir gently. Refrigerate overnight, or serve immediately. Serves 18–20.

If eggnog is not your thing, they have a slew of yummy recipes here or check out The Food Network’s favorite holiday cocktail recipes here.

Next up, the cookies! Philadelphia Magazine just did a amazing recipe round up from six of Philly’s best pastry chefs.

There are Brown Butter and Bourbon Biscotti by Monica Glass of 10 Arts Bistro & Lounge, Maple-Bacon Pinwheels by Jessica Mogardo of Garces Restaurant Group, Orange-Ginger Cookies by Elizabeth Halen of The Flying Monkey Bakery, Spiced Caramel Chocolate Tuiles by Frederick Ortega of Lacroix, Double Chocolate Sables by Caitlin Grady of Parc, and Chestnut-Whiskey Macaron by CedricBarberet of Le Bec-Fin, Georges’, and Table 31.

Last up, packaging with love! Tupperware has its time and place, and this is not it! We love the look of mason jars and the fact that they keep your cookies fresh and delicious. To make it special, all you need is a mason jar, square piece of fabric, raffia or ribbon, a piece of paper and scissors. For the tags, we simply cut out hearts.

Happy holidays and have a great weekend!

brighten up your look

The only thing better than shopping is finding a great deal. So I was beyond excited to style South Jersey Magazine’s Fall Fashion spread using budget-friendly pieces. This product shoot highlighted one of this season’s biggest trends: bright colors. Some of my favorite pieces were the sexy red jeans from Denim Habit, bold raspberry flats by Steve Madden, vibrant orange cocktail ring from H&M, and rich teal belt from Joey’s Boutique.

i carry your heart with me

We’ve seen the traditional pillows for ring bearers go by the wayside lately… but who can resist such this adorable ring holder from Paloma’s Nest?

This charming piece invokes the E.E. Cummings poem, “I Carry Your Heart With Me”…

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
                                  i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

sullivan owen

We met floral designer Sullivan Owen at Lovesick Expo and were so excited to check out her Queen Village studio last month. We loved getting to know her and spending time in her beautiful studio.

Sullivan describes her designs as “lush, abundant and full of the unexpected.” She loves taking trips to NYC to pick up the freshest and most unique blooms, and she specializes in handmade bridal bouquet wraps, custom textile design & table linen creations, one of a kind props, and sourcing vintage items.

Nestled on Bainbridge Street between 5th and 6th, Sullivan’s studio is beyond adorable. The walls are the perfect shade of gray (Martha Stewart Living paint in Dolphin) and we love the bookcase filled with her event vases, which are all available to rent. Our favorites are the milk jugs and antique vases.

The space is truly gorgeous and perfectly showcases Sullivan’s vintage style. We love not only her work, but her tremendous attention to detail… she even uses a vintage typewriter to hand type all of the cards for their delivery clients. So much nicer than someone’s messy handwriting on a generic happy birthday card!

Be sure to check out her blog for some beautiful floral inspiration. And if you’re feeling so inspired that you want to try your hand at floral design, sign up for one of her Philadelphia Flower School classes.

a day at the beach

Beach season is here, and I was excited to style South Jersey Magazine’s Best of the Shore cover shoot for the June issue. The shoot took place on a windy day on the beach and boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ.

For the swim look, we decided to show nautical-inspired stripes. The navy and blue striped bikini from Tommy Bahama was paired with a mesh off the shoulder cover up from Denim Habit. What you can’t see is that this bikini is reversible, with adorable polka dots on the other side.

For the boardwalk look, we went with a pretty flowing top in orange (one of the hottest colors of the season) paired with crisp white shorts from Denim Habit.

This shoot included great company and delicious boardwalk snacks including french fries and funnel cake. The most memorable moment was when the model Brittany was posing with an ice cream cone and seagull flew down and stuck its beak right into the ice cream. If only we got a picture of that! Here are a few behind the scenes shots I took…

j
